National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and thus reduce the disease's stigma by educating people about its symptoms and treatment options. Supporters hope that greater knowledge will lead to earlier detection of breast cancer, which is associated with higher long-term survival rates, and that money raised for breast cancer will produce a reliable, permanent cure.

According to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, rates of breast cancer vary depending on who you are and where you live. Rates vary between women and men and among people of different ethnicities and ages. They vary around the world and across the United States. In 2011, it is estimated that among U.S. women there will be 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer and there will be 39,520 breast cancer deaths.

All women are at risk for breast cancer. The two most important risk factors for breast cancer are: being female and getting older. The risk of getting breast cancer increases as you age. Most breast cancers and breast cancer deaths occur in women aged 50 and older. Until more is known about preventing breast cancer, early detection and effective treatment offer the best defense against breast cancer mortality. No matter your age, you should become familiar with how your breasts look and feel.  If you notice any changes, see your health care provider right away.

Recipe of the Month: Renee's Chocolate Chip Carrot Cake

• 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  
• 2 cups sugar
  
• 3 eggs
  
• 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flower
  
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
  
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  
• 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  
• 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  
• 2 tablespoons baking cocoa
  
• 1/2 cup water
  
• 1 tablespoon vanilla
  
• 2 cups shredded carrots
  
• 3/4 cup chopped nuts
  
• 3/4 cup chocolate chips
  
  Ingredients for Cream Cheese Frosting
  
• 1/4 cup butter, at room temperature
  
• 6 to 8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  
• 1 teaspoon grated orange zest
  
• 2 cups powdered sugar, measured and then sifted
  

Preheat oven to 350°F. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Sift dry ingredients together; add to creamed mixture alternately with water and vanilla. Fold in carrots, nuts, and chips. Turn into a greased and floured 9- x13-inch pan. Bake for 45 minutes. Cool and top with the Cream Cheese Frosting.

Serves 8 to 10
